What Is EPF (KWSP) in Malaysia?

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF), known locally as Kumpulan Wang Simpanan Pekerja (KWSP), is Malaysia's retirement savings fund.

For most eligible employees, EPF contributions are made every month by both the employee and employer. The employee's portion is deducted from their salary, while the employer contributes an additional amount.

For example, if you earn RM3,250 per month, part of your salary goes into EPF. Your employer also pays a separate contribution on your behalf. Both amounts help build your retirement savings over time.

EPF contributions are governed by the Employees Provident Fund Act 1991, with monthly contribution amounts determined using the applicable Third Schedule.

EPF Contribution Rate Malaysia 2026

How much EPF do you need to pay in Malaysia?

The answer depends on your monthly wages, age, citizenship or residency status, and applicable membership category.

For Malaysian employees below 60 years old, the standard EPF contribution rates in 2026 are:

Monthly SalaryEmployee EPF RateEmployer EPF Rate
RM5,000 and below11%13%
Above RM5,00011%12%

These are the standard statutory rates. Actual contribution amounts for wages up to RM20,000 must follow the official KWSP Third Schedule rather than simply multiplying the salary by a percentage.

This matters because EPF uses specific wage bands and contribution amounts. A direct percentage calculation can produce a slightly different result.

Our EPF contribution calculator is designed to help you check the applicable amounts more easily.

How to Calculate EPF in Malaysia

Calculating EPF starts with your monthly wages and the contribution category that applies to you.

For a Malaysian employee below 60 earning RM3,250 per month, the official KWSP contribution table gives the following amounts:

EPF Calculation DetailsAmount
Monthly salaryRM3,250.00
Employee EPF contributionRM359.00
Employer EPF contributionRM424.00
Total monthly EPF contributionRM783.00
Salary after employee EPF deductionRM2,891.00

The employee's RM359 contribution is deducted from their salary. The employer pays an additional RM424.

Together, RM783 is contributed to EPF for the month.

The remaining RM2,891 is the salary after the employee EPF deduction only. Your actual take-home salary may be lower after SOCSO, EIS, PCB or other applicable deductions.

Why Does the EPF Amount Differ From a Simple Percentage?

You might calculate 11% of RM3,250 and get RM357.50. But the official employee contribution for this example is RM359.

That's because KWSP uses the prescribed wage ranges in its Third Schedule.

For wages above RM20,000, percentage-based calculation rules apply, including the required rounding treatment.

This is why using an EPF calculator based on the official contribution schedule is more useful than relying on a basic percentage formula.

Employee EPF Contribution vs Employer EPF Contribution

Both employees and employers contribute to KWSP, but the money comes from different places.

Employee EPF Contribution

Your employee EPF contribution is deducted from your monthly wages.

For most Malaysian employees below 60, the standard contribution rate is 11%, subject to the applicable Third Schedule amount.

This deduction reduces the salary you receive in your bank account, but the amount is credited towards your EPF savings.

Employer EPF Contribution

Your employer's EPF contribution is an additional payment made by your company.

For most Malaysian employees below 60, employers contribute at the standard rate of 13% for monthly wages of RM5,000 or below, or 12% for wages above RM5,000.

The employer's contribution should not be treated as another deduction from your salary.

If you're reviewing your payslip, check the employee and employer portions separately.

EPF Contribution for Employees Aged 60 and Above

EPF contribution rates change when employees reach 60 years of age.

For Malaysian citizens aged 60 and above, the standard employee contribution is 0%, while the employer contributes 4%.

Permanent residents and certain non-Malaysian employees with older EPF membership arrangements may fall under different rates.

For example, a Malaysian permanent resident aged 60 or above may have an employee contribution rate of 5.5%, with an employer rate of 6.5% or 6%, depending on monthly wages.

That's why age and membership status matter when calculating EPF. Selecting the wrong category can give you the wrong deduction amount.

EPF Contribution for Foreign Workers in Malaysia

Foreign employees are also covered by Malaysia's updated EPF contribution requirements.

Starting with wages for October 2025, eligible non-Malaysian employees generally contribute 2% of monthly wages, with employers contributing another 2%.

This applies to qualifying employees under the relevant rules, while Malaysian permanent residents and certain long-standing EPF members retain different contribution arrangements.

If you're an expatriate, foreign worker or employer hiring non-Malaysian staff, make sure you select the correct employee category before estimating EPF.

EPF, SOCSO, EIS and PCB: What's the Difference?

If you've looked at a Malaysian payslip, you've probably noticed several deductions besides EPF.

Although they appear together in payroll, they serve different purposes.

Payroll ItemWhat It Means
EPF / KWSPRetirement savings contributions
SOCSO / PERKESOSocial security protection for eligible employees
EIS / SIPEmployment insurance protection for eligible employees
PCB / MTDMonthly income tax deduction

EPF is not the same as SOCSO, EIS or PCB.

Your employee EPF contribution is only one part of your overall payroll deductions. To estimate your final net salary, you also need to account for the other deductions that apply to your employment.

When Must Employers Pay EPF Contributions?

Employers in Malaysia are responsible for submitting both the employee and employer EPF contributions.

Generally, EPF contributions for a particular month's wages must be paid by the 15th day of the following month.

For example, EPF contributions relating to October wages must be paid by 15 November.

Employers should also keep accurate payroll records, use the correct contribution category and ensure the submitted amount matches the applicable KWSP schedule.

Late payments may result in additional charges.

Frequently Asked Questions About EPF Calculator Malaysia

Is this EPF Calculator Malaysia free to use?

Yes. You can use this free EPF calculator to estimate monthly employee and employer KWSP contributions without paying a subscription or creating an account.

What is the employee EPF contribution rate in Malaysia for 2026?

For most Malaysian employees below 60 years old, the standard employee EPF contribution rate is 11%. The actual monthly amount must follow the applicable KWSP contribution schedule.

How much EPF does an employer contribute in Malaysia?

For most Malaysian employees below 60, the standard employer EPF contribution rate is 13% when monthly wages are RM5,000 or below and 12% when wages exceed RM5,000.

Is EPF calculated on basic salary or gross salary?

EPF is calculated on wages that are subject to contributions under KWSP rules. This can include basic salary and certain additional payments. Not every allowance or payroll payment is necessarily subject to EPF, so employers should check the applicable wage definitions and exemptions.

Can I calculate my take-home salary using this EPF calculator?

You can estimate your salary after the employee EPF deduction. However, your final take-home salary may also depend on SOCSO, EIS, PCB and other applicable deductions.

Is EPF compulsory for foreign workers in Malaysia?

Mandatory EPF contributions apply to eligible non-Malaysian employees from October 2025 wages. The general rate is 2% for employees and 2% for employers, with different rules for certain membership and residency categories.

Does the employer EPF contribution reduce my salary?

No. The employer's statutory EPF contribution is an additional employer expense. Only the employee's EPF share is deducted from the employee's wages.

Why is my EPF deduction different from 11% of my salary?

For monthly wages up to RM20,000, the official KWSP Third Schedule uses prescribed contribution amounts. This can result in a difference between a simple percentage calculation and the actual required deduction.

Can I contribute more than the minimum EPF rate?

Yes. Eligible EPF members can arrange additional contributions under KWSP's applicable voluntary or excess contribution options, subject to the relevant rules.

How can I check whether my employer has paid EPF?

You can review your contribution records through the official KWSP i-Akaun service and compare the recorded payments with your payslip.
