Tip basics

What is a tip calculator?

A tip calculator finds the gratuity, total bill and per-person amounts from the bill and percentage you enter.

Tip amount

Bill amount × tip percentage ÷ 100

Total bill

Bill amount + tip amount

Total per person

Total bill ÷ number of people

How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage, then divide by 100.

Example: $100 × 15 ÷ 100 = $15 tip

Add the $15 tip to the $100 bill for a $115 total. When two people split it evenly, each person pays $57.50, including $50 of the bill and $7.50 of the tip.

Common tip percentages

These examples are general guidance. Tipping customs vary by country, culture, business and service type.

10%

A modest tip in situations where it fits local custom.

15%

A standard tip in some service settings.

18%

A commonly used restaurant tip.

20%

A common choice for strong service.

25%

A generous option for excellent service.

How to calculate a tip without a calculator

  • 10%: Move the decimal one place left.
  • 20%: Double the 10% amount.
  • 15%: Add 10% to half of the 10% amount.
  • Per person: Divide the final total by the number of people.

How to split a bill with a tip

First calculate the tip and add it to the bill. Divide that total by the number of people. The calculator also divides the original bill and tip separately, so everyone can see what their payment includes.

When a total does not divide evenly, one or more people may need to pay one minor currency unit more. The result panel identifies the remainder so the shares add up exactly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a tip?

Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, a 15% tip on a $100 bill is $100 × 15 ÷ 100, or $15.

How much should I tip?

The right tip depends on the country, culture, business, service type and your experience. Common choices include 10%, 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%, but no single percentage applies everywhere.

How do I calculate a 15% tip?

Find 10% of the bill, then add half of that amount. On an $80 bill, 10% is $8 and half is $4, so a 15% tip is $12.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Find 10% of the bill by moving the decimal one place left, then double that amount. On a $60 bill, 10% is $6, so 20% is $12.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill, then divide the final total by the number of people. This calculator also shows each person’s share of the original bill and tip separately.

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

Customs differ. This calculator uses the bill amount you enter, so you can enter either the pre-tax amount or the final bill according to your preference and local practice.

Can I enter a custom tip percentage?

Yes. Enter any percentage from 0% through 1,000%, including a decimal percentage with up to two decimal places.

How does rounding affect the tip?

Rounding the total or each person’s payment upward increases the amount paid without changing the selected tip percentage. The calculator shows the resulting effective tip percentage when rounding changes the total.

Does the currency selector convert currencies?

No. The selector changes the currency symbol and number formatting only. It does not apply an exchange rate or convert the bill amount.

What happens when the total cannot be divided evenly?

The calculator shows a one-minor-unit range and identifies how many people should pay one minor currency unit more so every share adds up to the displayed total.
